Herzogenaurach, June 8, 2022 — The sports company PUMA today presented the next generation of the PUMA Slipstream. The iconic ’80s basketball silhouette is reimagined for a new generation. Appropriately for this journey into a new world, PUMA’s global brand ambassadors are staging the “Lift-Off” of the Slipstream as part of the international “Welcome Unbored” campaign.
The silhouette’s origins date back to the Archive Slipstream, a high-top basketball shoe born in 1987 as the successor to the SKY LX. Presented as a performance model that was advertised as “designed for the serious gamer” at the time, the Slipstream pioneered its innovative material composition, which included embellishments such as imitation snakeskin, leather and faux fur.
In 2002, as part of a retro program, Slipstream models like the Slipstream Snake and Slipstream Beast were re-released to the Japanese market to satisfy the appetite for over-the-top, “more is more” sneaker design. As a result, the Slipstream was produced in special Made-in-Japan versions.
Now, 35 years after its initial release, PUMA is writing the latest chapter in the history of the Slipstream. This summer, the iconic sneaker returns in a variety of colorways and getups. The 2022 reissue of the iconic shoe combines basketball DNA with an undeniably clean and modern look. The elements and upper of the silhouette are given a modern take with a molded midsole, updated overlay panels and a redesigned collar construction.
The story of the accompanying “Welcome Unbored” campaign follows PUMA brand ambassadors such as Neymar Jr., LaMelo Ball, Danna Paola, Romeo Beckham and many more. You embark on a galactic journey to reach new horizons with the Slipstream. PUMA’s ambassadors invite those willing to escape the old to enter the new and join them on this journey.
The PUMA Slipstream 2022 is available worldwide from June 9th and throughout summer 2022 on PUMA.com and at selected retailers at a price of 110 Euro.
