SC Magdeburg is early German champion

The handball players from SC Magdeburg secured the championship early. They used the match point against Balingen – and thus celebrated their first championship title in 21 years.

SC Magdeburg is German handball champion again for the first time in 21 years. Coach Bennet Wiegert’s team secured the early title win by beating HBW Balingen-Weilstetten 31:26 (15:15). In the remaining two games, the SCM can no longer be ousted from the top of the Bundesliga in view of the 60:4 points.

Second German championship

“You should be careful with superlatives in sport, but at the moment it’s a fantastic feeling,” said Wiegert on “Sky”: “There was an incredible amount of mental pressure on us. It’s not about the master coach, it’s about the master team . Today we carried a small backpack with us but ended up doing that too.”

Four days after the unfortunate loss of the final in the European League (39:40 after extra time at Benfica Lisbon), SCM struggled for a long time with relegation candidate Balingen. It was only in the closing stages that the hosts, led by top thrower Omar Ingi Magnusson (nine goals), were able to gain a decisive advantage.

The Magdeburgers follow record champions THW Kiel, who had won the title in the past two seasons. For the traditional club it is the second all-German championship after the triumph under the current national coach Alfred Gislason in 2001, in the GDR the SCM had won ten championship titles.
