Queen Elizabeth: a new portrait for the Platinum Jubilee

P.er her Platinum Jubilee Elizabeth II has an extra portrait. Saturday 4 June, the third day of the celebrations for 70 years on the throne of Elizabeth, the online platform West Contemporary Editions will reveal The Platinum Queenwork signed by Carne Griffiths – Liverpool painter also known as The Organic Painter and known for the creative use of unconventional mediums such as tea, ink and alcohol.

“Queen Elizabeth when she ascended the throne”

The original portrait reveals a young Elizabeth shortly before her Coronation, which took place in Westminster on June 2, 1953: “I thought it was a particularly touching moment that of His Majesty about to ascend the throne,” explained Griffiths. “While I was painting, I tried to imagine the kinds of things she would see at the beginning of her reign.”

Queen Elizabeth in 70 prints

The original painting of the queen it was already sold last year for 25,000 pounds (about 30,000 euros) at a charity event. However, the work is accompanied by a series of 70 limited edition and hand-made prints, which can be purchased individually. Also on Saturday 4 June, one of the portrait prints will also be exhibited at the Corinthia Hotel from London.

Each of the prints is hand painted and made unique by the artist, using mixed techniques and three screen-printed layers: a fluorescent layer, a diamond powder and a layer of real platinum leaf. To produce them is the Jealous Gallerya famous London printer, which has already collaborated with Royal Academy and the V&Atwo institutions dear to the sovereign.

A cause that is also dear to the queen

The prints will be on sale on 4 June at the online platform of the West Contemporaty Edition at a cost of 1550 pounds each (just over 1800 euros). Of these, 150 will be donated to Great Ormond Street Hospitalthe London hospital dedicated to children and of which Elizabeth is the current patron. The artist himself chose the charity for the care received by his newborn daughter in 2012.
