This is the ideal dog for a camping holiday | Car

The golden retriever is the ideal dog for a holiday, both on the road and at the campsite. This four-legged friend is especially praised for its relaxed demeanor. That is one of the many conclusions from the National Camper Survey 2022.

Golden Retrievers are as obedient on holiday as they are at home, not quick to catch on and remain friendly when strange camping guests unexpectedly enter their territory. Overall, 34 percent of those surveyed selected the Golden Retriever as their ideal camping dog, with half of them noting its calmness along the way as a positive trait.

The Labrador Retriever came in second, followed by the Poodle. Incidentally, almost three quarters of dog owners simply take their loyal pet with them in the camper when they go out. Almost 65 percent have reserved their own sleeping place in the motorhome for the dog. On the other hand, a quarter of the motor home owners move into their own bed at night, in order to give their pet a place on the mattress.

The influence of corona

The study also pays a lot of attention to the influence of corona on the current travel behavior of motorhome enthusiasts. Before corona struck, most of them (49 percent) went on holiday with the camper about three to five times a year. It appears from the answers of the interviewees that the past corona period has had little influence on this frequency. Just as often they want to go out with the camper.

What is striking is the decreased preference for the airplane as an alternative means of transport. More than three quarters (78 percent) indicate that they will not or hardly make use of this (once at most) from now on. About 63 percent of motor home owners intend to fly less often compared to the period before the corona virus struck in the Netherlands.

The same applies to making long journeys outside of Europe. More than half (53 percent) of the respondents will do this less often. They cite the impact on the environment as the main reason. This awareness is also the biggest reason for them to switch to an electric motorhome: 49 percent want to do this to produce fewer emissions, 37 percent because they are afraid that they will no longer be allowed in cities, the other participants indicate to exchange their current motorhome in the future with a view to possible rapid loss of value.

Dutch nature

During the corona crisis, no less than 82 percent of the respondents appreciate Dutch nature more. In total, 24 percent voted in favor of South Limburg as the most beautiful area for motor home owners, putting this part of the Netherlands in first place. The Coastal and Dune Region (14 percent) and the Veluwe (13 percent) follow at an appropriate distance. The Bollenstreek forms the tail of this list with less than 1 percent (0.7 percent).

Motorhomes are looking for simplicity rather than luxury on their travels, as it turns out. The majority (40 percent) indicate that they prefer to stay at a small campsite. Free camping in nature, although hardly allowed in the Netherlands, also scores well with 24 percent. Only 6 percent of those surveyed say they feel their best in luxuriously furnished camping spots.

The National Camper Survey 2022 was carried out on behalf of camper sharing platform Goboony among 562 camper travelers.
