FOOTBALL – The relief was visible at SV Pesse trainer Harm Spijker. After the final whistle, he received the congratulations from his colleague from SC Emmeloord with a big smile, followed by a deep sigh. Barely a minute before that handshake, the Drenthe club crawled through the eye of the needle when the guests hit the post, thereby missing the chance of 3-3.
Pesse won 3-2 and therefore played it safe on the penultimate match day. A draw would have resulted in an exciting week, because then Pesse still had to be found for Zuidwolde (although that team would have had to make up for three points and also a lot of goals).
But the joy in the Pesse camp was nevertheless understandable, because who gave the whitemen a penny for enforcement prior to the season? Even its own players and supporters had a hard time with it. After the third promotion since 2014/2015, Pesse had a disastrous start to the 2020/2021 season. After four matches, the club was at the bottom of the 2nd division, with a goal difference of 5 for and already 20 against. But because, due to corona, the season was canceled, Spijker’s team (who succeeded John Kramer after the promotion) got a new chance on the stage where the club had never acted before.
After a hopeless cup mission with three defeats, the season didn’t start too well. After six games, Pesse had only two points. Only in the new year, after another corona break, did the resurrection come. Under the leadership of the Hartman brothers (Marco and Sander) and the returned Remmert Verbrugge, confidence grew and the results came and against SC Emmeloord, which already played safe a few weeks ago, SV Pesse was able to extend the second division league for a season.
