On Wednesday evening, a fierce argument arose between Barbara Barend and John de Bever during the live broadcast of HLF8. Almost everyone missed it – only 236,000 people watched – but it was pretty exciting. At one point, the sports journalist even accused the folk singer of making stupid comments.

puppet show

HLF8 had two guests at the table making a podcast about the LGBTIQA+ community. What nonsense, John remarked at one point from the audience. “I’m glad I didn’t experience this puppet show, because I think it’s a puppet show with all those letters. But hey, everyone should live their life the way they want.”

So what’s a puppet show about it? “Well, because you create something that… There will certainly be discrimination or racist things, but I see so many letters now… That’s this, that’s this.”

Barbara furious

Barbara reacts as if stung by a wasp. “Yes, but John, that is not said at all. Yes, but John, can I have a minute? No one is saying this is about discrimination. It’s about recognition.”

Rutger Castricum: “No arguing, no arguing.”

Barbara: “No, but nobody uses the word discrimination, so I think it’s a bit of a stupid comment.”

John: “You are being pigeonholed. You are putting yourself in a box and that is not necessary at all. Pink supporters is not necessary at all, that charade. I like that puppet show. They should know that themselves if they want to.”

“You’re flying at him!”

The presenter of the podcast in question: “I find it interesting that you are gay yourself, but you think it is a puppet show.”

John: “You are discriminating yourself by making pink supporters. I’m an I, I’m an H, I’m an A…”

Barbara explodes: “You?!?!”

Rutger thinks that Barbara reacts very violently. “If you have a dissenting opinion and you talk about it differently… Well, you hit him like that! He can think like that, can’t he?”

Furious from studio

Afterwards, Barbara walked out of the studio furiously, Johan Derksen reveals in Today Inside. “I really had to laugh. You know Barbara Barend. When it comes to gays, minority groups, or Jewish issues, she gets a little obsessive. That’s okay. She sat on her talking chair of: ‘This and that!’, and all kinds of abbreviations of minority groups.”

He continues: “But that John de Bever is sitting on a bar stool behind it and he is gay himself and he thinks: what is this about, what is this bullshit?! So he says that. Well, Barbara was completely shocked. He had also left angry, didn’t I, I heard from John.”

Although HLF8 and Today Inside are both productions of Talpa, VI was not allowed to broadcast the confrontation between Barbara and John. The TV fight can be seen via KIJK.nl
