“Our situation has worsened again in the last few weeks. We are in a relegation battle. We have to face this situation together in order to improve our position in the table as quickly as possible,” said managing partner Hermann Schüller. However, Drijencic should remain with the club in another capacity.
The Baskets have only two wins from 13 games in the league. The North Germans are currently in 18th place. Oldenburg also lost at MBC Weißenfels on Tuesday (82:87) and thus suffered their eighth competitive defeat in a row. The goal of the season is a long way off: relegation of the otherwise accustomed club is closer than entry into the knockout stage.
Abaz with experience as a head coach
Born in Sarajevo, Abaz came to Oldenburg in 2019. The 48-year-old had worked as a head coach in Lebanon and Bahrain for the previous ten years.
“It’s probably the most difficult situation in which you can take over a team. However, I feel the trust of the club’s management and approach this task with optimism,” explained Abaz.
Drijencic has “great merits” for the baskets
Drijencic celebrated the cup victory with the Baskets in 2015 just a few weeks after taking office. In 2017 Oldenburg was runner-up, in 2020 the club failed in the final of the BBL Cup.
“Mladen has done a great job and has contributed here in a way that goes beyond the norm. He has played an enormous part in the successes that we have celebrated in recent years,” emphasized Schüller. The long-time coach didn’t deserve “to wear himself out completely”.
