Just after Texas school drama: Donald Trump and Texas governor are guests at US gun lobby meeting | Abroad

Former US President Donald Trump will speak this weekend at the annual conference of the US gun lobbyist NRA, just after the shooting at a Texas elementary school. Texas Governor Greg Abbott is also on the guest list, The Washington Post and The Insider reported on Wednesday.

After the massacre in Uvalde, Texas, there was another loud protest against the flexible gun laws in the US. At least 19 children and two teachers were killed in the shooting. “As a nation, we need to ask ourselves: When the hell are we going to face the gun lobby?” President Joe Biden said.

Nevertheless, the NRA (National Rifle Association) organizes the Memorial Day weekend in the Texan capital Houston within a few days. Visitors can marvel at “more than fourteen acres of the latest weapons and equipment,” the gun group announced.

In addition to Trump and Abbott, other Republican politicians will also be in attendance, including Texas Senator Ted Cruz. According to the latter, a stricter weapons policy is not the solution to the violence. Cruz proposes to arm teachers themselves so that they can defend themselves in the event of an attack.

Special about this edition of the event: the gun enthusiasts present will have to leave their weapon(s) at home, the NRA announced. This measure was taken as a precaution due to Trump’s presence.
