Andrea Petkovic has missed her first third round in a Grand Slam tournament since 2019: The German number two from Darmstadt failed at the French Open with a 1: 6, 6: 7 (3: 7) defeat at the former world number one Wiktoria Asarenka from Belarus.
Petkovic lost the first round against the two-time Grand Slam winner. The 34-year-old came under pressure again and again when serving on the well-filled outdoor pitch 14, and the cheers from the German fans didn’t bring any improvement at first.
Hope then deceptive
In the second set, the former French Open semi-finalist got two breaks and now stood up to Asarenka. But her opponent kept coming back and had the better end for herself.
She feels very good, 34-year-old Petkovic said after the successful and confident start with her favorite major against French Oceane Dodin: “Hopefully it stays that way.” But it wasn’t enough against Azarenka.
