Burglar from Hoogeveen in jail for seven months

A 37-year-old man from Hoogeveen has been sentenced by the court in Groningen to seven months in prison for a burglary at the Einsteinlaan in Hoogeveen and the theft of a car parked near the house.

The man had just been out of prison for a month when he committed the burglary.

The public prosecutor had demanded eight months in prison against him, because he is said to have committed several burglaries, including a burglary at the Elzenkamp and at the Van Limburg Stirumstraat in Hoogeveen. But the court finds these two burglaries not proven and acquitted the man for this.

The man entered the house on Einsteinlaan in mid-August last year with a crowbar. In this way he looted an iPad, jewellery, gold and silver objects, piggy banks and a number of watches. He also stole a Ford Focus, which was parked near the house.

The Hoogevener came into the picture after a house search at another person. He had 34 pocket watches in his house. They turned out to be from a burglary on Van Limburg Stirumstraat. De Hoogevener would absolutely not have stolen the clocks, he said at a hearing two weeks ago.

The court is of the opinion that there is insufficient evidence to convict him for that fact and acquitted him thereof. The burglar has a strong criminal record. There were still four months on the shelf for him from a previously suspended sentence. He still has to serve this sentence.
