Review: The Rolling Stones :: Live At The El Mocambo

325 Toronto fans were delighted when they won tickets to April Wine’s club gig via a radio station. The unknown Cockroaches would act as support. The joy passed when the fans arrived at “El Mocambo” on March 4th – and gave way to ecstasy. The head of programming brought the “bad news” about the cancellation of the Cockroaches, but an adequate replacement would have been found: “The Strolling Bones, uh: The Rolling Stones”.

With April Wine demoted to opening act, the Stones played their way through a satisfying best-of-set with Billy Preston, as if braving the coming punk menace. The complete show from March 5 is now available for the first time, with three pieces from the previous evening. Particularly interesting: the eight-minute “Worried About You”, which would not end up on an album until four years later. What works by the way: Getting in the mood for the upcoming “Stones Sixty” tour, which we will follow via WWW flicker videos.
