Bremen (dpa) – Clemens Fritz remains head of the professional football and scouting department at Werder Bremen. Just under a week after being promoted to the Bundesliga, the club announced on Saturday that the former Bremen team captain had extended his contract. The agreement was expected after the return to the 1st division. Werder did not provide any information about the length of the new contract.
“After the rise, the time had come to finalize what was already known,” said the 41-year-old, according to the club’s announcement. Fritz has been in Bremen since 2006. Only as a player, after the end of his career in 2017, he was then introduced to his tasks at Werder. In the past second division season, he was also increasingly the mouthpiece for the team in public and thus relieved sports director Frank Baumann.
“He did an excellent job in a difficult transfer summer and played a major role in putting together the squad that enabled us to return to the Bundesliga,” said Baumann. “In addition, his role in the team has changed again, he has moved closer to the team and is also taking on a more prominent role in public communication.”
