Boris Johnson: “EU must compromise on Northern Ireland protocols” | Abroad

The UK will have to act if the European Union is unwilling to compromise on the Brexit protocols in Northern Ireland. So says British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who travels to Belfast today for an emergency meeting with the Northern Irish parties.

In an article in the ‘Belfast Telegraph’, Johnson said there is still a “sensible landing place” where the interests of all parties are protected, including the integrity of the EU’s internal market, which the protocol maintains. is becoming.

Johnson says the government remains open to a “real dialogue” with Brussels. “But if there is no movement from the EU side, the government will set out its next steps in a statement to parliament in the coming days,” it said.

Customs Controls

As early as this week, ministers could table emergency legislation that would override customs controls that now have to be applied to goods transported from Britain to Northern Ireland.

EU leaders have said such a move would violate Britain’s international treaty obligations under the Withdrawal Agreement signed by Johnson and lead to retaliatory measures.

On Friday, the unionist party DUP refused to participate in the first session of parliament in protest at Northern Ireland’s protocol to vote on a new parliament speaker. For that reason, the parliament cannot start its work.
