Severe thunderstorm forecast in south and east: ‘Watch the road’ | NOW

From the end of the morning in Zeeland, North Brabant and the (south) eastern provinces, it can start storms with possible wind gusts and hail, Weerplaza predicts. The KNMI has issued a code yellow. Nevertheless, Weerplaza expects that the severity of the storm and the showers will be relatively easy.

Inland it will be summer with 25 to 27 degrees locally, Weerplaza says. It is a bit cooler in the coastal provinces. In the warm air, some spicy rain and thunderstorms arise, locally with a lot of rain, hail and heavy wind gusts.

According to Weerplaza meteorologist Roosmarijn Knol, the intensity of the predicted showers will be relatively bad, but you have to be careful, she tells NU.nl.

“See this as a foretaste for the generally heavier showers in the summer,” Knol said. “It is important to be alert. The showers can be tough.”

Sudden braking predecessors in traffic

According to Knol, road users should pay extra attention, especially when everyone puts on the brakes due to a sudden shower. This can lead to traffic jams, “where it would be better to drive slowly”.

Camping guests are advised by the meteorologist to secure the tent extra well because of the possible wind gusts. “If you have a good tent, you can get away with it in a strong mood”, explains Knol. “But secure your tent extra well. Due to the drop in temperature in a shower, strong gusts of wind can occur.”

‘Avoid open fields or water during thunderstorms’

Weerplaza advises not to stand in an open field or sit in a boat if you expect heavy showers or thunderstorms. If you do get caught by a thunderstorm while you’re outside, stay away from high points as much as possible.

If you’re in an open field during the thunderstorm, it’s best to squat down, with your hands over your ears. Do not lie down, as this increases the risk of electrocution, and do not use an umbrella. If you as a group find yourself in a thunderstorm, sit a bit apart.

Even people who are already safely inside can still take steps to limit the damage to a minimum. For example, by removing the plugs from the sockets.

The weather institute also advises against showering or taking a bath during the thunderstorm. “Water usually enters the bathroom through copper pipes, and copper conducts electricity very well,” explains Weerplaza. “That could lead to dangerous situations.” To prevent water damage, the weather institute also advises to keep all windows and doors closed during a thunderstorm.
