Gardening is more popular than ever, notes allotment garden association ATV de Zes Wielen in Oudorp. “More younger people are joining the association,” said chairman Hil Bakker. He also sees many differences with the past: “Back then people had a garden here because they couldn’t eat otherwise, now it’s a hobby,” says Hil.
The association is celebrating its 50th anniversary and that is why they are holding an open day on 21 May. “That way people can see what it looks like here,” Hil said. You can of course also become a member, but due to the popularity of gardening, there is a waiting list of about six years. “Yes, you do need patience, just like gardening”, Hil laughs.
In addition to patience, it is also just serious work in the garden. “You have to work in the garden three days a week,” says Hil. Many people overlook this. “Of the ten that come, six or seven are also doing well and remain.”

Twice a year they hold a garden review at the association. Here they look at the condition of the gardens and, where necessary, owners of poorly maintained gardens are addressed. It’s not just a warning, people are also sometimes turned away.
