200 escaped prisoners arrested after riots in Ecuador prison

Ecuadorian army has arrested 200 escapees, Ecuadorian police said. The inmates had escaped Monday during riots at a prison in the city of Santo Domingo de los Colorados, about 80 kilometers north of the capital Quito. At least 43 detainees were killed.

Ecuador regularly faces violence in its prisons, usually the result of fighting between rival gangs. Monday’s riots had also erupted after clashes between gangs. Last year, a total of 321 inmates were killed in prison riots. As almost everywhere in Latin America, prisons in Ecuador are overcrowded.
