“On May 9, at 1:37 a.m., Orange County sheriffs responded to a call from 2,500 block of Egret Shores Drive in Orlando about a shooting. A man identified as Adreian Payne, born February 19, 1991, was shot and pronounced dead in hospital,” local authorities said in a statement on Twitter.
Police added that the 29-year-old suspected gunman, who remained at the scene, has been taken into custody on charges of first degree murder. No information was released about the motive for the shooting.
Payne, who made waves in college basketball with Michigan State, was drafted 15th by the Atlanta Hawks in 2014. However, he was unable to continue with that team. He then played in the NBA for Minnesota (2014-2017) and Orlando (2018).
He also performed in Greece for Panathinaikos, in China for Nanjing and in France for Villeurbanne. Via the Turkish Ormanspor, Payne ended up at the Lithuanian Utena last year. He then returned to the US without a club.
Clubs are in shock after Payne’s passing.
