A number of preparatory works for the Oosterweel connection will start today at the Schijnpoort traffic complex near the Antwerp Sportpaleis, which threatens to cause a lot of nuisance. There is only one lane available on Schijnpoortweg in both directions.
Among other things, the works must ensure that cyclists and pedestrians can safely pass through the future Oosterweelwerf. There will be a two-way bicycle path and an improved crossing near the Sportpaleis, so that after the summer the bicycle and pedestrian path on the other side of the Sportpaleis can be closed.
According to Lantis, some interventions are also necessary for the flow of road traffic during the Oosterweel works. In the coming months, the contractor will harden the central reservations and remove outdated tram infrastructure on Schijnpoortweg and Bisschoppenhoflaan near the Sportpaleis. The intersection of the Sportpaleis business zone with Schijnpoortweg will also be redesigned so that traffic can drive smoothly towards Burgemeester G. Theunisbrug.
A new connection complex is planned at Schijnpoort as part of the Oosterweel project. In the future you will be able to drive onto the Antwerp ring road (R1) to the south and towards the Netherlands. The new R1 will be under the Schijnpoortweg, instead of the Merksem viaduct.
