Racing driver Robin Frijns has won the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps with his Belgian team WRT.
Together with his teammates René Rast and Sean Gelael, the Maastricht rider was supreme on the circuit in the Ardennes in the LMP2 class.
‘A crazy race’
The frenetic race was plagued by rain showers and incidents, and was interrupted by a red flag situation a total of three times. Robin Frijns: “Obviously very happy with the result. It was a crazy race, with three red flags. We were even allowed to lead in the pouring rain which was a bit of a surprise! After the disappointment here in Spa last year, it was important to win.”
best rain rider
During the heavy rain, Frijns showed his driving skills and even took the lead in the race. In his WRT-Oreca he trumped the much faster Hypercars. Even when the rain was pouring down from the sky, Frijns continued to drive faster and faster lap times. In total he built up a lead of about 15 seconds.
Drying asphalt
A crash by Alex Brundle and the heavy rain were the reason for the race to be stopped, which wiped out Frijns’ lead. After the restart, on a drying track, Frijns was overtaken by the much more powerful Hypercars within a few laps.
Monza
Frijns’ team was flagged third overall. The win in the LMP2 class is a good boost towards the third round of the WEC championship on July 10 at the Monza circuit.
