A fleece sweater belonging to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has fetched more than $100,000 at a Christie’s auction in London. The money will go to humanitarian aid for Ukraine.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson presided over the event at the Tate Modern and called Zelensky “one of the most incredible leaders of modern times,” according to the British newspaper ‘The Telegraph’.
The set price for the jersey was 50,000 pounds (58,000 euros), but in the end it went under the hammer for almost double: 90,000 pounds (105,000 euros). Zelensky himself gave a short speech via video link just before the bidding started.
Cup
In addition to the jersey, a host of other items were offered, including a rooster-shaped cup, which Johnson was presented with during his walk through Kiev on his visit to Ukraine last month.
Bidders could also go on a guided tour of Kiev by the city’s mayor and former boxing champion Vitali Klitschko. “Support Ukraine tonight, my friends, so that that great old European capital of Kiev can never be threatened again and that Ukraine can be free again,” Johnson said.
