Vives organizes disaster exercise to prepare students for reality urgently
A car drives into a group of young people who are waiting for a bus to leave for an event in Ghent. The driver of the car has become unwell. There are many casualties. The aim is to present the final year nursing students with a disaster scenario that is as realistic as possible. To this end, Vives works together with AZ Groeninge and The Red Cross, among others. The students do receive the theory about disaster relief during their training, but they are rarely able to practice it in practice.
The students have to provide the necessary help to the victims, but above all they also have to create order in the chaos of the moment. And that is quite a challenge. It is very difficult at first. Only when they gain more insight into the scale and seriousness of the disaster will coordination get underway.
The exercise is evaluated to bring out the pain points.
