We have been celebrating Liberation Day since May 1945. The Second World War is a long time ago, but the feeling of ‘own liberation’ is recent for many people.

“Years ago, when I came out, that was the last time I felt liberated,” says a man walking through the city with his friend. On the Markt in Roermond there is a microphone from L1 and people share their ultimate memory of their own personal liberation on Liberation Day.

Birthday
A resident of Roermond who walks with his dog: “Actually I am liberated every day. After my retirement I feel every morning that I feel good and am allowed again. Wonderful.”

A family from Heerlen has a very special relationship with May 5. “Sixteen years ago, our son was born on Liberation Day. That makes May 5 very special for us. That’s why we are all in the city now.”

COC
“Yesterday during Remembrance Day, I last felt liberated,” says a young woman. “I was allowed to lay a wreath for the COC in Sittard. That is grateful and beautiful that we can and are allowed to do that in this country.”

Party
“Last felt liberated?” A passer-by on the Market does not have to think long about this question. “Today, because it’s a party and I’m going to the Liberation Festival in the city in a bit. Wonderful. I’m really looking forward to it.”
