Second dead after spiritual ayahuasca session, same organization involved

The organization that held a hallucinogenic session with ayahuasca tea in Eersel in April 2019 after which a participant died, was also active in Haarlem shortly afterwards. Someone was also killed after the session there, it became clear in court on Tuesday.

The news from Eersel made a big impression at the time. A house on the Nieuwstraat turned out to be an international meeting point for Inner Mastery International BV, a Spanish organization that regularly organized hour-long meetings with ayahuasca tea in Eersel. That tea makes you very nauseous, but it is said to have a cleansing effect on the mind.

Several experts warn against its use; you could get serious cardiac arrhythmias resulting in death.

Dead in Eersel
After visiting such an afternoon in Eersel, a 31-year-old Hungarian died in April 2019. Shortly afterwards, the police decided to raid the house, where another ayahuasca session was in progress. Four people were arrested in the action, all foreigners who were involved in Inner Mastery International BV.

Three of them were prosecuted by the Public Prosecution Service (OM) in October of that year. A connection between the death of the Hungarian and the ayahuasca could not be proven, so the three were only prosecuted for possession of ayahuasca. Ayahuasca contains the banned substance DMT.

Dead in Haarlem
A few weeks after the decision of the Public Prosecution Service, another session was held, this time in Haarlem. A visitor later died there as well. It was only announced on Tuesday that the Russian man also used ayahuasca before his death, when the case went to court.

The Public Prosecution Service demanded a 100-hour community service against the Italian and Russian organizers for possession of the banned substance. The two are both mentioned on the website of Inner Mastery International BV, known from Eersel.

After the incidents, Inner Mastery International BV had several meetings in the Netherlands on the agenda, but is currently only active in other countries, including Belgium.
