Bratislava (dpa) – The leadership of the German Handball Federation (DHB) views the different corona measures at the European Championships in Slovakia and Hungary critically and with great skepticism.
While the Hungarian halls can be fully utilized with spectators, in Slovakia only 25 percent of the hall capacity is permitted.
“I’m really curious how this tournament will continue when you see that there are 20,000 in Budapest and nobody is wearing a mask,” said national coach Alfred Gislason in Bratislava. “We’re all tested every day and it seems to be done very, very well here. But you hear from over there that it’s a bit different.”
The DHB selection denies their preliminary round at the European Championships in the Slovakian capital and played against Belarus (33:29) on Friday evening in front of a little more than 1200 spectators. The day before, there were more than 20,000 fans in the hall for Hungary’s game against the Netherlands in Budapest.
“We have exactly the standards here that we know from our republic,” praised DHB sports director Axel Kromer the conditions in Bratislava. “It would be fine with me if it were like here in Hungary. Even if the mood in Hungary is of course advertising for handball again. But doing that at the expense of infections is not in our interest.”
