Whether traveling or lounging on the couch – e-book readers are the particularly practical, lighter alternative to books. “Stiftung Warentest” has tested the common models. Read with us which seven of them were rated “good”.
Amazon’s Kindle may have been the market leader for a long time. In the meantime, however, there are numerous other e-book readers from different providers in different price ranges. “Stiftung Warentest” tested eight popular models – and rated seven of them as “good”.
E-book reader at “Stiftung Warentest”
E-book readers from Tolino, Pocketbook, Kobo and of course Amazon were tested. These are not only devices from different brands, but also from different systems. With an e-book reader from Amazon, you are limited to what the online retailer has to offer, albeit a fairly large one. In the test, the Kindle devices could not open the Epub format, which public libraries often use. This was included in the overall rating. The models from Tolino and Co. allow you to buy and borrow e-books from a wide range of retailers (e.g. on the Onleihe or Overdrive platforms) and thus offer a larger selection.

The handling and image quality of the devices were also evaluated, as well as their robustness, workmanship and battery life in the next step. The e-book readers are priced between 79 and 430 euros. And as it turns out, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the most expensive if you want to buy a good e-book reader.
These 7 e-book readers received the result “good”
Seven of the eight devices tested received the “Good” rating from “Stiftung Warentest” – an astonishingly homogeneous result. Here is the overview:
- Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2021 (around 150 euros)
- Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 2021 (about 190 euros)
- Kobo Elipsa (around 430 euros)
- Kobo Sage (about 290 euros)
- Tolino Vision 6 (almost 170 euros)
It is not often that consumer organization product tests are so positive overall. Incidentally, an e-book reader from the Pocketbook brand brought up the rear in the test, and with a grade of 3.3 (“satisfactory”) it is probably not really that bad.
You should pay attention to this when buying
Because the test result does not speak for itself, we are giving you a little help here on what to look out for when buying an e-book reader.
