World stars Serena Williams and Lewis Hamilton are bidding for Chelsea

What will become of Chelsea FC? A number of interested parties threw their hats into the bidding ring after Roman Abramovich withdrew. Two sports stars should now also get involved.

In the race for the London football club Chelsea FC, the investor Martin Broughton brought two international sports celebrities on board in the form of the former tennis world number one Serena Williams and Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton. Williams and Hamilton wanted to participate in an offer with around ten million pounds, Sky Sports reported on Thursday.

Billions in talks

A spokesman for Hamilton confirmed the driver’s involvement, but said the figures given by Sky were not accurate. The broadcaster also reports that Williams is also interested in Chelsea.

The English capital club are set to be sold after Russian-born oligarch Roman Abramovich was forced to cede control amid the threat of sanctions against him. The club is currently under the de facto supervision of the state, but should soon be in new hands – probably for a sum of billions. The list of interested parties is long. Among them is the Ricketts family, owners of the US baseball team Chicago Cubs.

Chelsea are currently still playing with a special license. This runs until May 31st. By then, at the latest, the new owner must have been found.
