US President Joe Biden and his wife Jill hosted thousands of children in the White House yard on Monday for the traditional Easter egg roll. For the 79-year-old president, that was the first time: last year the ‘Easter Egg Roll’ was canceled due to the corona virus.

Thousands of children were allowed to roll hard-boiled eggs across the lawn in the garden of the US president’s official residence on Monday. They were greeted by Joe Biden and his wife Jill who addressed the children from a balcony flanked by two large Easter bunnies.

The Easter Egg Roll was first organized by then-President Rutherford Hayes in 1878. The idea is for the children to roll painted hard-boiled eggs across the grass using a wooden spoon. Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperating on Monday: it was overcast in Washington DC with occasional light rain.

‘EGGucation’

This year’s event was all about ‘EGGucation’, a play on words with the English words for egg, ‘egg’, and education, ‘education’. “Education never ends,” said first lady Jill Biden, herself an English teacher. “We want to honor the determination of education here.”

The south side of the White House yard had been transformed into a school of sorts for the occasion, with educational activities for the children. The well-known American talk show host Jimmy Fallon read from a children’s book.
