The DHB team is in a state of upheaval. New players join the squad, older ones step down. The next big challenge is now certain: it’s time for the World Cup.
Germany’s handball players have qualified for the upcoming World Cup. The team of national coach Alfred Gislason won the play-off second leg against the Faroe Islands 33:27 (15:16) and secured participation in the World Cup finals in January 2023 in Poland and Sweden. The DHB team had already won the first leg on Wednesday with 34:26.
The best German goalscorer on Saturday evening in Torshavn were playmaker Luca Witzke and left winger Lukas Mertens with five goals each. Through the success in the knockout duel against the blatant outsider, the selection of the German Handball Federation (DHB) qualified for a world championship for the 13th time in a row.
At the last World Cup in 2021 in Egypt, Germany finished twelfth – it was the worst place in the 25 tournaments that have been played so far. A DHB men’s team has been world champion in indoor handball three times: in 1938, 1978 and 2007.
