The Scots are drinking Boston empty! Before the World Cup, when videos of Americans claiming to have the best fans were circulating online, they probably hadn’t counted on their own ancestors: the Europeans. Because thanks to the World Cup, the residents of the Land of the Free can marvel at what fan culture looks like without fighter jets. On June 14th, Trump celebrated his 80th birthday with a show that the “Daily Show” smugly described as worthy of a ten-year-old.

Scottish fans empty Boston’s bars

The beer in Boston also seems to be tasty, because the Scottish fans are giving the city in the unpronounceable state of Massakuu…er…Massachusetts a lot of trouble. In an interview with ABC News, a Scottish supporter reported: “We drank the bar dry and then all they had left was Bud Light.” Of course, you really can’t expect that from anyone – and so the Scots drink up Boston’s stockpile. According to “ESPN,” they drank four times as much beer as usual on holidays like July 4th. An emergency delivery was then necessary to quench the fans’ thirst.

Scotland won the opening game against Haiti on June 14th 1-0 and will face Morocco on the night of June 19th to 20th, also in Boston. As both games take place at the same venue, the city has been declared a Scottish fan zone. Videos of Scots jumping on boats and showing off their bagpipe skills are flooding social media channels. Next stop will be Miami, where they will face Brazil. Here’s hoping Miami doesn’t rely on its Bud Light supplies.

Who else is traveling to the World Cup?

The fact that the Scots have some of the “best” fans in the world became clear at the home European Championships in 2024. But who else is among the biggest fans traveling to the World Cup?

While Scotland seems to be the benchmark with an increase in flight bookings of around 1,000 percent compared to the previous year, many Germans are also flying to the USA to experience the dream of the World Cup trophy live. Turkish fans and Moroccan supporters also show a large turnout in the venues. All of this is in stark contrast to our Swiss neighbors, who are not participating in the travel boom and are even recording a 3 percent decline in bookings to the venues. The World Cup seems to have an even more significant negative effect on Spanish visitors: According to “Euro News”, flight bookings there fell by a full 26 percent.

Scotland is already the clear winner of the fan competition – both in terms of drinking competition and in terms of the number of supporters traveling. Wherever the Scottish team play, expect to leave a trail of dry taps in their wake.
