He led Brazil to its fourth World Cup title and is one of the country’s most successful coaches. Carlos Alberto Parreira has now been admitted to a hospital in Rio de Janeiro.

Carlos Alberto Parreira, Brazil’s 1994 world champion coach, has been hospitalized in Rio de Janeiro. The clinic confirmed the admission of the former national coach, but did not provide any further information about the 83-year-old’s health.

Parreira has been living with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, since 2023. The disease was considered to have been suppressed for a time, but later recurred.

Parreira is one of the most successful coaches in Brazilian football history. He led Brazil to their fourth World Cup title in 1994 in the USA. As head coach, he has so far looked after five different national teams at finals. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Parreira was national coach of Kuwait (1982), the United Arab Emirates (1990), Brazil (1994/2006), Saudi Arabia (1998) and South Africa (2010).

He also won the 2004 Copa América and the 2005 Confederations Cup as coach of the Seleção. He was already part of the national team’s staff as a fitness trainer during the 1970 World Cup triumph.
