When life goes off track and you have to see what happens next…

The Eels have announced their new studio album. “Cookie Happened”, the 16th album by the band around Mark Oliver Everett alias E, will be released on October 16th.

Coinciding with the announcement, the group released their first single, “Cap In Hand.” All information at a glance here.

“Cap In Hand” tells of regret and new beginnings

The new song is told from the perspective of a character who is dealing with the consequences of his own mistakes. The focus is on trying to make up for what has been missed and taking responsibility. Musically, “Cap In Hand” moves between melancholy and cautious optimism, giving a first impression of the mood of the upcoming album.

According to Everett, the character is among several recurring characters who appear on “Cookie Happened.” In the press release for the release, he says about the song that he deliberately wanted to give the impression as if someone was speaking who had thrown his life off track and was now trying to repair the damage caused.

Mark Oliver Everett on the album title

Everett also commented on the title of the album in the press release. He refers to the transience of human experiences and memories. As a source of inspiration, he cites, with a wink, the Cookie Monster from “Sesame Street” and his well-known wisdom that one should not be upset that a cookie has disappeared, but rather be happy that it existed.

According to the songwriter, this attitude is also reflected in the new pieces. The songs deal with everyday successes, disappointments and the question of how to find meaning in life’s contradictory experiences.

Follow-up to “Eels Time!”

“Cookie Happened” follows “Eels Time!”, which was released in 2024. The album was received positively by many critics and continued the band’s productive late phase. In terms of content, the songs combined personal retrospectives with dry humor and a sober form of confidence.

Why, after decades of highs and lows, is Iggy Pop now revered and loved like never before? Our cover story about the “Godfather of Punk” provides the answer. The issue exclusively includes a vinyl single with live versions of “The Passenger” and “Lust For Life”, recorded during the 2023 concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
