Rúben Amorim is the new coach of AC Milan. The ex-Man United coach has reportedly signed a contract with the Serie A fifth-place team until 2028 with an option for another season. The net salary reported in the media was 3.5 million euros per season. In addition, there can be significant bonuses that are linked to the achievement of certain sporting goals: winning trophies and a placement sufficient to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Amorim has been without a club since being released from Manchester United in January. With the Red Devils he scored an average of 1.43 points in 63 games. The 41-year-old previously also looked after Sporting Lisbon, SC Braga and Casa Pia AC in his home country of Portugal. Before him, ex-Frankfurt and Wolfsburg player Oliver Glasner, who is leaving Crystal Palace this summer, was also brought into play for the Milanese coaching position.
After a disappointing Milan season with missing out on the Champions League places in Serie A, coach Massimiliano Allegri as well as the managing director, the sports director and the technical director had to leave. A new coach has now been found. “We have been following Rúben for years and his time at Sporting has been extremely impressive and reflects exactly the style of play we are looking for. He is one of the best prepared and most innovative coaches of the new European generation – young, ambitious and with a modern football identity characterized by possession dominance, a modern pressing system and a clear tactical approach,” said Gerry Cardinale, managing partner of RedBird Capital Partners.
Amorim is quoted as saying: “There are goals that stay with you throughout your career and coaching AC Milan has always been one of my goals. I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an exceptional fan base around the world. It is a challenge that I accept with pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colors represent. I can’t wait to get started and experience the passion that drives AC Milan every day.”
