The number of workplace accidents involving electric bicycles and speed pedelecs continues to rise. This is evident from the annual Barometer of insurer Ethias. In 2025, Ethias registered almost 1,000 accidents involving an electric bicycle or speed pedelec, almost twice as many as in 2021.

The number of accidents involving electric scooters and scooters also continues to rise. Last year, the insurer counted almost 500 accidents involving a scooter, electric or otherwise. The number of claims involving an electric scooter, speed pedelec or electric scooter has increased by 74 percent over the past five years.
The electric bicycle is still at the top of the list of vehicles most often involved in workplace accidents. About 60 percent of these accidents are the result of loss of control, and not from a collision with another vehicle.
Ethias therefore calls for more prevention and awareness, especially now that the use of electric vehicles for commuting continues to grow.
