Brighton & Hove Albion have secured the services of right-back Costinha (26). The Portuguese comes to the Seagulls from Olympiacos Piraeus, with whom he signed a contract until 2031. The transfer fee for Brighton’s second newcomer, who will compete with the Dutch World Cup driver Mats Wieffer (26), is reportedly around 12.7 million euros.
Costinha left his training club Rio Ave FC for Greece two years ago. For Olympiakos he played 74 games (one goal). In Brighton he will meet again the talented striker Charalampos Kostoulas (19), with whom he appeared on the pitch 24 times in his first season in Piraeus and won the double. Kostoulas let Olympiakos move last summer for a record fee of 35 million euros.
“Costinha is a player we have been watching closely for some time. He has the necessary defensive skills, the necessary intensity and the understanding of what is important to us, and we are convinced that he will be an excellent addition to our squad,” said coach Fabian Hürzeler. “He is confident both with and without the ball and will add more competition at right-back alongside our existing options. I am very pleased that he has decided to continue his development with us in the Premier League.”
