A monumental long-facade farmhouse in Eersel is for sale. Jan Schiebroek’s father bought the farm more than fifty years ago. “The stables were still there at the time and he started renovating room by room. He was busy with it every evening and every weekend.”
The Schiebroek family moved from The Hague to Brabant when Jan was four years old. “My father was able to get a job as an architect in Eindhoven and therefore started looking for housing in the area.” He saw possibilities in the farm on the Schadewijk in Eersel and started renovating it. “I think he spent fifteen years turning it into this house.”
Friends always came to play
“I have very fond memories of my childhood in this house,” says Jan. “Friends always came to play with us because we had so much space. I’ve always really liked all that space. It gives you a kind of freedom. You don’t have to meet each other, so to speak, if you don’t feel like it.”
The farm from 1900 has now been split into two independent living areas. “That only happened later. When my brother and I moved out, my parents realized that it was very big for the two of them. And then the house was divided. My grandmother lived in the left part for a while and I also lived with my girlfriend for a while.”
For sale for 990,000 euros
Jan’s father died eight years ago and his mother lives in a nursing home. Jan and his brother have rented out the farm in recent years, but have now put it up for sale. The asking price is 990,000 euros. The property stands on a plot of 1420 square meters and has a living area of 399 square meters.
The house is located on a quiet road, just outside the village. “It is located between the farms and what I like is the sense of community there,” says Jan. “If there is something, everyone helps each other. That is very different from the city.”
If you want to do some shopping, you don’t have to drive far. “The village itself is located directly on the other side of the provincial road. You can cycle to the supermarket in a few minutes.”
Looking for someone like dad
The brothers have not yet found the ideal buyer for their parental home. “It would be nice if someone who looks like my father would come in, so someone who is handy and not afraid to tackle things,” says Jan. “For example, with current energy prices, better insulation wouldn’t hurt. It’s already a beautiful house, but something great can be made of it. That of course costs money, time and energy. But then you really sit there like a god in France.”
