Un digital creativity club for girls, a challenge to help them develop soft skills: this is the formula of Girls Code it Better, the program that brings girls closer to Stem technology and disciplines: for the next edition, which will start with the new school year, lower and upper secondary schools can register by April 23 on https://girlscodeitbetter.it. There are already more than a hundred candidate schools all over Italy, the goal is to reach 150.
“In October in each school we will carry out the methodological training of a teacher who will follow the 20 girls selected along the path, which lasts 45 hours in lower secondary schools, and 35 in high school”, explains Costanza Torrini, creator of the project that was born for initiative of Officina Futuro Fondazione W-Group. «We support him with our technical figure, a computer engineer, or a designer. Girls code it Better it is not a coding course but a digital creativity club; the girls develop a project using a technology of their choice between electronic boards and automation, 3D design and printing, web design and web development, augmented reality, videomaking, App programming. Each school deals with 1-2 of these techniques, the girls try their hand and in the meantime they develop transversal skills, such as working in a team, solving problems, communicating effectively “.
Girls Code it Better started 8 years ago in Emilia Romagna and Lombardy, but now it is in 17 regions, and is trying to reach uncovered and more fragile territories. The goal is to bring the girls closer to disciplines that are still predominantly male, and for which too often they do not feel “brought”. With consequences in the choice of the future course of study, which will lead them to exclude the most attractive sectors for the world of work.
«For our students, Girls Code it Better is one fun challenge, they try their hand at enhancing the territory, or the school. In Cisternino, in Puglia, they have built a website to attract tourists, with cultural and gastronomic itineraries. A way to grow ».
