The annual battle through the mud in Dommelen is back. Only a few ingredients are needed for mud rugby: a heavy sandbag, a plowed corn field and avid players who are not afraid to go wild in the mud.
The mud rugby in Dommelen – also known as Kwalleballen – is very popular. The event was canceled for two years because of the corona pandemic, but on Sunday there was plenty of pushing, tackling and jumping on top of the other.
The rules are simple: make sure the sandbag ends up in the opponent’s pool. How, it doesn’t matter. In fact, anything is allowed, only if one of the rugby players really gets into a corner and threatens to sink into the dung, does the referee intervene.
