On August 31, 2022, the term of office of one of the Dutch judges in the General Court of the European Union, Mr. R. Barents, will expire. The request is for the Netherlands to nominate a candidate who will be appointed as a judge in the EU Court with effect from 1 September 2022. On 17 December 2021, the Council of Ministers nominated Mr HMH (Herman) Speyart van Woerden. This candidate has withdrawn for personal reasons.

The Council of Ministers has now decided to nominate Mr. S. (Steven) Verschuur for appointment as a judge in the General Court. Mr Verschuur was selected through a public application procedure involving a recommendation committee chaired by the President of the Supreme Court, Ms G. de Groot. Mr Verschuur is a lawyer in Brussels and a deputy judge at the District Court of Zeeland-West-Brabant.

The governments of the Member States of the European Union decide on appointments by consensus, after (positive) advice from the so-called ‘255 committee’, consisting of judges of the highest national courts, former judges of the General Court and the EU Court, and expert lawyers.
