Just like with the men, last year’s winner is also missing from the women in the Amstel Gold Race. Marianne Vos skips the Limburg hill classic on Sunday. The Dutch cyclist wants to prepare as best as possible for Paris-Roubaix, the classic that is scheduled for next week.
Vos was victorious in the Gold Race last year. She defeated Demi Vollering and Annemiek van Vleuten in the sprint. The 34-year-old Brabant, the leader of Jumbo-Visma, did not go further than twentieth place in the Tour of Flanders last week, just over a minute from the Belgian winner Lotte Kopecky.
,,Marianne finished second in Paris-Roubaix last year. She has chosen not to ride in Limburg now, but to do some extra training, so that she appears rested and fit at the start in Denain next week,” said sports director Lieselot Decroix.
Last year, Wout van Aert, Vos’s teammate at Jumbo-Visma, won the men’s race. The Belgian is missing on Sunday because of the aftermath of a corona infection, which already cost him ‘Flanders’ last week.
