SECOND NATURE begins with the title track that sets the direction for Lucius’ fourth album. A classic disco song with all the typical elements, even synthetic violins drive through the picture like exclamation marks, before the song ends in the dance floor mantra “I just can’t get enough”. But that’s deceptive, the basic mood is in this line: “I feel like could fell apart / Like dancing with a broken heart,” sings Joss Wolfe, who is processing her divorce on SECOND NATURE, produced by Dave Cobb and Brandi Carlisle.

So it is that “24” first feigns a respectful bow to ABBA, but then forgets the euphoria and prefers to become a wistful memory. This melancholy hangs over everything like mildew, also over “Dance Around”, where even a creaking guitar in the chorus can’t really break the foam barrier.
Ballads like “White Lies” or “The Man I’ll Never Find” also stop just before they can pupate into a full-fledged Torch song. Ultimately, however, it is precisely this quality, the always only hinted at elation, the always just prevented serotonin explosion, that ensures that the New York quartet does not lose itself in kitsch and convention, but has made a great indie disco album that has you dancing through the darker ones hours.
