On March 15, during a Foo Fighters world tour, Taylor Hawkins was found dead in his hotel room, aged just 50. After condolences from music stars ranging from Liam Gallagher to Paul McCartney, Queen guitarist Brian May shared his thoughts on the drummer’s death: “I see him as a boy – just like I saw George Michael as a boy -; losing her feels completely wrong. It’s very frustrating,” he said in an interview with US radio station Sirius XM.

“It makes you feel like you want to negotiate with death”

From his words it can be concluded that May does not find it easy to get over what has happened: “It makes you feel like you want to negotiate with death… It makes you feel like maybe if you can bring it back only considered long enough, if you talk about it enough, if you analyze it enough. But of course it doesn’t all work that way,” says May.

At his last concert, Hawkins mimed Mercury

Taylor Hawkins was a great Queen disciple. The Foo Fighters regularly covered pieces by the British rock group at their concerts – including during the drummer’s last show with the Foo Fighters at the “Lollapalooza Argentina” festival. Hawkins and Dave Grohl even switched places for a cover of Queen’s classic Somebody To Love.

May: “They knew more about us than we did ourselves”

May also called Hawkins and Foos guitarist Pat Smear the most passionate Queen fans ever: “They knew more about us than we did,” said the 74-year-old. Hawkins was the “best publicist for Queen ever” and continued: “He was so good for our image! He kind of saw us as cool – which a lot of people didn’t do back then.”

Last interview just before Hawkins died

Hawkins was very close to Queen and visited the British in his studio several times. The two only exchanged ideas shortly before his death, says May: “In my life I often talked to him. I only spoke to him a week ago when we lost him. We talked about all sorts of things, about Dave, what life is like, his joys, his frustrations and being in the Foo Fighters.”
