On “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Ed Sheeran debuted his “F1” song. In addition to Dave Grohl, he was also supported by John Mayer.

“Drive” is definitely one of the highlights of the “F1” soundtrack. The adrenaline-pumping Formula 1 film starring Brad Pitt contains some strong numbers, but Ed Sheeran’s song with Supergroup may have been the biggest surprise.

On Wednesday (January 14th) Sheeran introduced him on stage for the first time when he was a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”. He was also accompanied by the musicians who recorded the piece with him: Dave Grohl (on drums) and Rami Jaffee (on keyboard) from the Foo Fighters, as well as John Mayer and Blake Slatkin on guitar and Pino Palladino on bass.

No question, a “real rock song,” as Sheeran told the audience and dutifully picked up the electric guitar.

Ed Sheeran immediately thought of Dave Grohl for “Drive”.

Last summer, the singer explained that he really wanted to write a song that you would “turn up really loud while driving.”

So that the rock part of the piece could be authentic, Dave Grohl and Pino Palladino came to mind early on, a “true rock dream team”. Sheeran said: “I really think what we created fits the scene in the film really well.”

The result could also be worth it at the Oscars next March. Currently, “Drive” is on the shortlist for Best Song nominations along with numerous other songs, including some from “KPop Demon Hunters.”

Just last September, Ed Sheeran released his new album PLAY. In December he presented the new tracks in a comparatively intimate setting, including in Munich. The Australian leg of the singer’s world tour begins on January 16th. In May we’ll head to South, Central and North America.
