Alexandra Popp has left her future at VfL Wolfsburg open; the former DFB captain is toying with a move to Borussia Dortmund.

“That’s still in the back of my mind, I’m making no secret of it,” said the 34-year-old attacker in an interview with “Kicker”: “It’s difficult to say whether it would be the right time this year.”

Popp’s contract in Wolfsburg expires at the end of the season. The 145-time national player and 2016 Olympic champion has long been the talk of the BVB women, who are second in the table in the Regionalliga West and are known for their Bundesliga ambitions. Popp was also born in Witten in the Ruhr area and previously played for MSV Duisburg before moving to VfL in 2012.

“It could be that I stay in Wolfsburg”

Popp “doesn’t want to have to make a hasty decision at this stage of my career,” she said. “There are question marks in every direction. It could be that I stay in Wolfsburg. But it could also be that I play somewhere else after this season or don’t play at all.”

In the Bundesliga, Popp leads the list of top scorers together with Hoffenheim’s Selina Cerci (both ten goals). “I feel very good physically,” emphasized the three-time “Footballer of the Year” in Germany.

“I can play more freely”

The fact that she can regenerate more after retiring from the national team in 2024 is “extremely good” for her. And: “I no longer have to bear a large part of the responsibility that I carried for many years. Of course that has something to do with me. I can perform more freely.”

Via XETRA, the BVB share temporarily lost 0.15 percent to 3.36 euros.
