The korfball players of Groen Geel are sentenced to play-downs. Tonight the club from Wormer lost the last game in the relegation group of the Korfbal League from KCC with 23-19.
Groen Geel, which had to win by at least two goals for enforcement, did not start sharply against the team from Capelle aan den IJssel. The visitors immediately took a four-point lead (1-5). Moments later, the difference was even five points. Then came the team, where the injured Scott de Decker was missing due to an ankle injury.
The connection was found, because after about twenty minutes the match was almost in balance again: 9-10. Still, KCC made another small gap to make it 9-12 at the halfway mark.
No real chance after rest
That actually turned out to be the final blow for Groen Geel. The North Hollanders were able to keep up, but the backlog was not wiped out. KCC took the lead throughout the second half and did not run into problems in the final phase. Still, Groen Geel coach Daniel Harmzen did not agree that his team could not lay claim to anything tonight.

Groen Geel’s Stijn Hoekstra was joint top scorer of the match with six goals. KCC member Mark Behrens also made six. Together with the Amsterdam-based Blauw-Wit, which won against Oost-Arnhem 27-23 tonight, KCC is certain of a place in the Korfbal League for next season.
Groen Geel will decide with the loser of the main division final who will get the last spot at the highest level. It is not yet known who that will be. Hoekstra is not very concerned that Groen Geel will fly out of the Korfbal League after three years.

The fact that Groen Geel is still not sure of their survival after tonight was a blow to the group of players, Harmzen said afterwards. “It was equally emotional in the group. It is now heads together and shoulders underneath.”
