Nick Woltemade misses a penalty but Newcastle United prevail in a thrilling FA Cup clash. A goalkeeper becomes the hero of the evening.

For national player Nick Woltemade, the traditional FA Cup was almost over after just one game – also because he missed a penalty. With Newcastle United, the ex-Stuttgart player was threatened with elimination in the third round of the English Cup competition against AFC Bournemouth before the Magpies saved themselves in extra time with a last-minute goal.

In the penalty shootout, Woltemade hit the ball against the crossbar, but the hosts still prevailed 7-6 in the end. Former Schalke player Malick Thiaw scored, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale parried Bafodé Diakité’s final shot. After 120 minutes the score was 3:3 (2:2, 0:0).

Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle the lead in the 50th minute after Woltemade’s assist. Bournemouth turned the game around with goals from Alex Scott and David Brookes. Anthony Gordon equalized with a penalty in stoppage time and forced extra time. Barnes scored again to make it 3-2 before Marcus Tavernier equalized shortly before the end.

Last year’s finalists Manchester City, however, had no problems. In the 10-1 (4-0) win against third division club Exeter City, Rico Lewis was the Skyblues’ only double goalscorer, who also benefited from two own goals from the opponent in the first half. The Premier League clubs Fulham FC (3-1 against Middlesbrough FC), Burnley FC (5-1 against Millwall FC) and Brentford FC (2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday) also prevailed against lower-class clubs in the afternoon.
