Marc-André ter Stegen has to leave FC Barcelona in order to go to the World Cup. Because the German needs match practice. It is now becoming increasingly clear where he should get them.

Marc-André ter Stegen’s move to FC Girona is getting closer and closer. As the Spanish sports newspaper “Sport” has learned, the DFB goalkeeper has basically agreed to a loan. Because: In Girona he would have a regular place in goal, would be the clear number one in the second half of the season and would receive the match practice necessary for a World Cup nomination. He wouldn’t have to move to do this; the journey time from Barcelona to Girona is around 70 to 80 minutes.

But the change is not yet fixed. A big problem is the German’s salary. Girona cannot take over that completely. The clubs would have to agree on how they would divide it among themselves. According to “Sport”, Barcelona hopes that Girona will take over around a quarter. But that’s probably still too high for the little neighbor. The talks are ongoing.

For ter Stegen, the loan move is probably the best chance to travel to the USA as number one in the DFB goal. In November, national coach Julian Nagelsmann also emphasized: “I don’t set the conditions that he has to play in a top club, because that’s always a bit of a matter of interpretation.”

It is more important that ter Stegen “plays reasonably well”. For him it is important that he plays at all. “Whether this is an absolutely top European club or not is not the all-important thing.”

That would suit Girona, because the Spanish club is definitely not a top club, is ranked 16th out of 20 in the top Spanish league and is fighting against relegation. Ter Stegen should help stabilize the defense. With 34 goals conceded in 18 games, Girona has the most vulnerable defense in the league.
