Beaten Wong 6-4 6-4, now the Tuscan waits for Rublev or Borges: if he reaches the final in the 250m and Australia loses to Poland in the United Cup, Lorenzo reaches his highest career position
Lorenzo Musetti flies to the semifinals of the ATP 250 in Hong Kong. The Tuscan, seeded no. 1 of the tournament, he got rid of the host, Coleman Wong, without too many problems, in two sets (6-4 6-4 the final score in an hour and 14′) to reach his 25th semi-final of his career, the eleventh on hard court. A match that the blue played at his best, with a small missed pass at the beginning of the second set, recovered without too many problems.
musetti, first set
—
In the first partial Musetti demonstrates why he is now a permanent top 10 player: centered on the ball, concentrated, decisive. Wong cancels a first break point at 2-2, but at 3-3 Lorenzo has two in a row, and the second is good. Musetti orchestrates the game which is a pleasure from the baseline, and on serve he never allows the opponent to even gain the advantage.
second set of muzzles
—
After a first set won in 36 minutes, the second set opens with a small “break” for Lorenzo, who goes 1-3 down with a few too many errors. Wong’s joy, however, is short-lived. Musetti recovers the break and at 4-4 makes the decisive extension, taking away his opponent’s serve for the second time in the match, effectively closing it.
semi-final
—
Musetti will face one of Rublev or Borges in the semi-final and is also awaiting the outcome of the United Cup tie between Australia and Poland: should Swiatek and his teammates win, by reaching the final in Hong Kong he would be number 5 in the world, thanks to the overtaking of Alex de Minaur, involved in the team competition. Joy for Lorenzo also in doubles, given that he is already in the final with the other Lorenzo, Sonego, thanks to the forfeit in the semi-final of Diallo and Wong himself.
