Since they became legal in Italy, snow socks have invaded the market, but there are some things to know before using them
From the beginning of 2023 it will also be possible to use the fabric snow chainsmore commonly known as “snow socks“. This accessory, which is an alternative to the more well-known metal snow chains, has been authorized in our country with the circular 300/Strad/1/0000035611 of 2022 of the Ministry of the Interior and with the subsequent decree of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport of 23 February 2023. Using snow socks, therefore, is today absolutely permitted but provided that comply with some requirements.
Are chains and snow socks the same?
Yes, for legal purposes and during a police check, having snow chains or socks in your car is absolutely identical, as long as the socks are a product approved according to the standard Uni EN 16662-1:2020 and as long as they are still in good condition, if already used in the past.
When is it mandatory to have snow socks in the car?
Since socks and snow chains are, by law, equated, it follows that they fall under the same obligation as winter tyres: from November 15th to April 15thon the road and motorway sections established by regions, provinces, municipalities and motorway managers, it is mandatory to drive with winter tires or, alternatively, chains or snow socks.
How fast can you go with snow socks?
Exactly as for snow chains, the law also imposes a maximum speed for socks that must not be exceeded when this accessory is mounted on the wheels of the car. In both cases the speed not to be exceeded is that of 50 km per hour. Some snow socks report a maximum speed of 40 km per hour and this could be a symptom of a lack of product approval which should always be checked before purchasing.
How many snow socks need to be fitted?
The legislation requires that snow socks be mounted “at least” on the vehicle drive wheelsbut nothing prevents us from mounting them on the other two wheels too. In the case of all-wheel drive, however, snow socks should be fitted on all four wheels, although it is not an obligation: it is better to check the car manufacturer’s suggestions.
What are the pros of snow socks?
Compared to snow chains, socks are almost always cheaper. They are also lighter and more convenient to place in the trunk easier to assemble and, above all, they cannot damage tires or wheel arches. They can be washed and reused, albeit within the limits specified in the sales packaging. Driving comfort with socks is significantly superior to that with chains.
What are the cons of snow socks?
Compared to chains, snow socks are much less durable. This means that, if we use them often, they will never last as long as chains. For obvious reasons, then, socks do not offer the grip on the asphalt permitted by the chains, but this is a relative problem if the 50 times foreseen by the code are not exceeded.
