There are many terms and names in the world of fish dishes, which do not always mean what you might think.

Your Christmas table may have featured cobbler’s salmon, which isn’t even salmon. What about Do you know the differences between anchovies, sardines, and anchovies?

Pro kala has put together instructions on how to distinguish between different titles:

Anchovy

Anchovies are a well-known canned fish, especially in the Nordic countries. It is usually made from kilo shark fillets. Canned anchovies are semi-canned, which means they require cold storage in order to be preserved.

Many people think that the English word anchovy means anchovy, but even though the words look the same, anchovy is actually an anchovy.

Jansson’s fillet

Jansson’s fillet is the marketing name for anchovy-type canned fish, which is precisely used to make jansson’s temptation. Jansson’s fillet is often made from small herring caught on the west coast of Sweden.

Seasoned fish

Traditional spiced fish is a delicacy made from a whole kilo of shark. The same term is sometimes used to refer to canned fish that is seasoned in general, but for example the Seasoned Fish of the Year awarded at the Herring Market is kilo shark prepared in the traditional way and with a traditional recipe.

Anchovy

In the rest of Europe, the anchovy is known in English as anchovy. Anchovy is actually a type of fish, and not just the name of a preserve. Caesar sauce gets its flavor from anchovies. Canned anchovies are usually preserved in oil, and are therefore very different from anchovies, where the preservation is done with sugar salting and vinegar.

Sardine

Sardines and anchovies both belong to the herring order, but to different tribes within it: anchovies are their own tribe, while sardines belong to herrings. We mainly sell sardines in canned form like sardines, but sardines have a milder taste. They are also slightly larger than anchovies.

Herring

Herring is not only a type of fish but also a canned fish familiar to many. Herring is sold marinated in many different flavors. Traditionally, it is made from sugar-salted herring caught in the waters of Iceland or Norway. Herring do not swim in Finnish waters. The herring found in the Baltic Sea is the herring.

Cobbler salmon

Shoe salmon, despite its name, is not a salmon at all. Seasoned fish sold under this name is always made from herring. Shoe salmon is made by rolling salted herring fillets and pouring a sweet spiced broth on top.
