Ruben Amorim is no longer manager of Manchester United. The club had only won three league games since the beginning of November. Recently, Amorim had sharply criticized the club’s management.

Ruben Amorim is no longer head coach of Manchester United, the club announced on Monday morning. “With Manchester United currently sitting in sixth place in the Premier League, the club’s management have reluctantly decided that it is time to make a change”the statement said. U18 coach Darren Fletcher will be in charge of the team in the game at Burnley FC on Wednesday.

Few points, many Discussion points

A little over a year ago, Manchester United paid eleven million euros to get the sought-after Amorim away from Sporting Lisbon. However, Amorim was unable to stabilize the “Red Devils” in terms of sport; recently there was only one win and three draws from the last five league games. Since the beginning of November, United have won just three league games (six draws, three defeats).

But it’s not just sport that hasn’t been going well lately. There were also reports of increasing tensions between the 40-year-old and the club management. Amorim criticized interference from high-ranking United figures in his work, which he would not tolerate elsewhere. “I just want to say that I came here to be a manager, not a coach”he was quoted as saying after Sunday’s draw against Leeds.

Europa League title missed

Last year, Amorim led the club to the final of the Europa League. There, however, his team lost 0-1 to Tottenham Hotspur in an English duel.

The traditional club has been trying to build on previous times of success for several years. But since the departure of legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, many coaches have failed in their mission to establish the club at the top in the long term. This also included Ralf Rangnick, who looked after United between December 2021 and May 2022. Since last season, Manchester has shared the status of record champions with Liverpool FC, who also won the title 20 times.
